Officials in the Trump administration are pushing ahead with a proposal to place President Donald Trump on the $250 bill. According to a report from the Washington Post, the new bill would commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, and a proposed markup of its design is already public.
Trump would be the first living person to feature on an official bill of US currency since Spencer Clark in 1866. Since then, it has been the law that no living person could feature on US currency. It is unclear whether the Trump administration is deciding to lift that law altogether for this occasion. A Trump portrait on a circulating banknote would likely require congressional action or a legal workaround before any official launch.
A similar design was shared by GOP Kentucky Rep. Andy Barr in January, who posted a picture holding a giant mock-up of the $250 note, alongside U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach, one of the Trump appointees who has “repeatedly urged staff” at the Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing agency to press ahead with the bill, according to the Post.
The Treasury Department has already taken another historic step by announcing that Trump’s signature will appear on future U.S. paper currency alongside the Treasury secretary. That signature plan does not carry the same legal issue as a portrait, but it shows how the administration is tying currency symbolism to the 250th anniversary and the 47th President.

On Thursday, a Treasury spokesperson said the printing agency “is conducting appropriate planning and due diligence” with the $250 bill. “Should this legislative mandate be signed into law, the BEP is moving proactively to produce a $250 commemorative note which will appropriately recognize the 250th Anniversary of our great nation,” the spokesperson added.
